VAPP Law: Gender Protection Is The First Step To Women Empowerment – Edo FIDA
The Edo branch of International Federation of Women
Lawyers (FIDA) has described as a major
breakthrough, the domestication of The
Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law in the State.
Edo FIDA Chairperson, Iryn Omorogiuwa who stated this during
an event in Benin City on Thursday to Mark
2019 FIDA week in the state said, assent to the Bill by Governor Godwin
Obaseki brought a sigh of relief to
stakeholders, particularly FIDA.
According to Omorogiuwa, “this is a celebrated victory and a
major breakthrough in the fight against violence, especially on women”.
The FIDA Chairperson said, gender protection is the first
step to creating enabling environment for women to contribute towards National
development, adding, it has become necessary to have effective laws to check gender-base
violence as well as ensure strict compliance.
Commissioner for Justice,
Yinka Omorogbe said, violence against women obstructs their participation in
development, saying,”gender-based violence serves to improverish women and
their families, saps public resources and lowers economic productivity”.
Omorogbe, represented by the
Director of Citizens Rights, Charity Ebosele noted that, the measures to curb
violence against women and girls are not just rooted in humanity and human
rights, but must be seen to impact on the economy and sustainable development.
On his part, deputy
governor, Phillip Shaibu said the VAPP Law has put an end to all forms of
victimization of any person or persons in the state.
The deputy governor who was
represented by his wife, Mariam Shaibu charged citizens to take advantage of
the Law to protect themselves.
The theme of this year’s FIDA Week is, ‘The Violence Against
Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law: A Tool For Attaining Sustainable Development’.
