No Parking Directive: Motorists Yet To Comply

Despite a new directive by Edo State Government against indiscriminate parking on major roads and highways, commercial motorists still park, pick and drop passengers at unauthorized areas in Benin city, the state capital.
The directive which also affect private motorists has been mostly violated by commercial bus and taxi drivers who undermine the presence of traffic officials stationed at ‘No Parking’ zones to carry out these acts of indiscipline.
At Sapele, Sokponmba, Mission, Airport, Akpakpava and other major roads in the metropolis, these motorists are observed going about their day-to-day business in areas with ‘NO PARKING’ signs.
Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq had recently in a statement, warned motorists in the state to obey the new directive, after an earlier directive showed a list of roads where parking of vehicles were ban in Benin City.
According to the Edo SSG, “The State Government warns that commercial buses and other motorists can only park, pick and drop passengers at designated bus stops and parks in Benin City. Those who continue to flout the rule will face corresponding sanctions. This move is to restore sanity to our major roads and also protect the lives of our people who are endangered by the unruly conduct of some motorists, who park, drop and pick passengers indiscriminately.”
The move which is in line with ‘Project Clean Up Edo’ campaign is yet to witness full compliance, as some commercial motorists prefer shortcut despite the state government designated (central) motor-park at Obakhawaye.
The state government had mandated Officials of Nigeria Police, Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), and the Public Works Volunteer (PUWOV) to tow and prosecute defaulting vehicles and erring motorists.
However, investigations revealed, the commercial motorists compromise some of these officials, to have their way in these unauthorized locations hence the non-adherence to the government directives.
Some motorists who spoke with The Nigerian Observer on the issue, appealed to the state government to carry out palliative work at the Central motor-park, before the main construction work begins, to save their vehicles from disrepair.
The motorists also attributed disobedience of the directives to the poor state of the Obakhawaye Motor-park, which usually gets flooded each time it rains, forcing commuters and motorists out of the area.
