Electricity Consumers In Edo Applaud Gov Obaseki's Stance On BEDC

Benin City - Following the decision by Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki to walk the Managing Director of the Benin electricity distribution company (BEDC), Funke Osibodu out of his office for failing to deliver on her obligations, electricity consumers in the state have applauded the Governor for standing on the side of the people.

The consumers who narrated how epileptic power supply by BEDC is negatively affecting their businesses, expressed joy over the decision of Governor Obaseki to join them in passing a vote of no confidence on the electricity Disco.

Speaking with The Nigeria OBSERVER in the Edo state capital, an Hair dresser, Blessing Aghayere said the coming of BEDC brought hope of improved power supply to business owners that depends on electricity to run their businesses.

Aghayere added: "Without electricity I cannot do my business, I now depend on generator because I have lost hope in BEDC who only give us light 3 hours a day in my area, that is if they give us at all."

Also, Mr osarobo Johnson told our correspondent that despite not having power to operate his welding business, BEDC still comes up with estimated bills, which according to him is "cheating".

"I have a generator I use for my welding business and I do not depend on BEDC, but I am surprise that at the end of the month they still bring bills. I do not know what they want me to do again ", Osarobo lamented.

Osarobo, while commending the Governor for being on the side of the people, appealed to the State government to create alternative source of power to support small medium enterprises (SMEs) from " folding" up across the state.

A frozen food dealer, Miss Mercy Enagwina who also lauded Obaseki, expressed displeasure over the activities of the Disco.

According to Her, "The electricity transformer in our area went bad, and we the residents contributed money among themselves to fix it, yet BEDC has not come to power it.

"We are happy now that the governor is on our side. BEDC has come to drive us out of business, but Obaseki will not allow that."

Recall Obaseki on Tuesday received members of the Federal House of Representatives Committee on Power led by Hon. Daniel Asuquo in government house were he was surprised to see Osibodu among the national assembly delegation even when her name was not on the list of expected guests.

“BEDC has been an obstacle all the way. They will not provide electricity and will not allow you to get alternative sources of power. The state will not allow it,” the governor said.

“As Governor of Edo State, we have lost confidence in BEDC. We don’t want them here. We are in darkness. Let us remain in darkness until we find people who are capable of delivering electricity. This is our position", the Governor was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, a group under the aegis of BEDC Franchise States People’s Alliance held series of protests recently in Benin and the federal capital territory (Abuja).

The group made up of Activists from the company's franchise States of Delta, Edo, Ekiti and Ondo are calling for the sack of the BEDC Boss and her management team over what they described as a breach of Section 74 Subsection 2 Of the Power Reform Act 2005.
