Give Details of Power Infrastructure Procure, Install Since You Took Over For Verification, Group Challenges BEDC
Benin City - A group, under the aegis of BEDC Franchise States People’s Alliance has challenged the management of Benin Electricity Distribution company (BEDC) to give details of power infrastructures procured, installed or changed "with exact locations" since they took over for verification.
The group, in press briefing today in Benin city stated that since BEDC took over the assets of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), they have not added any “discernable “ equipment to what they inherited.
Leader of the group, Leftist Omobude Agho said the management of BEDC has a business model that recognises profit alone against the tenets of delivering public utility as crucial as electricity to all citizens irrespective of Political, Social or economic status.
"The micro economic bloc (SMEs) which is the bedrock of every economy is being frustrated out of business due to the BEDC greedy and wicked business thrusts”, Leftist Agho told journalists.
Citing Section 74 Subsection 2 Of The Power Reform Act 2005, Agho expressed disappointment with the Bureau for Public Enterprise (BPE) for allegedly Orchestrating a one year contract extension for BEDC, instead of pushing for the review of the performance agreement.
He said the bureau is "paying deaf hears to the cries of the people" within the franchise area, but noted, the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has embarked on a new metering programme under the Meter Access Provider (MAP) scheme.
"Ekiti, Delta, Edo and ondo states have enough power that is generated to serve everybody but the management of BEDC deliberately refused to take enough load from the GENCOs to serve us but would rather take little load to service mostly it Special Lines customers, leaving the rest of us in darkness".
Meanwhile, Osibodu in a press briefing recently in Benin city faulted the Edo CSOs protests which she attributed to an ongoing court case between BEDC and group.
She assured electricity consumers that the company remain undaunting in sanitiziting the distribution network for the common good of all customers.
