Communal crisis looms in Edo
Crisis looms in Eyaen and Ahor villages in Uhonmwode Local Government area of Edo state, over boundary dispute.
There are indication that if the concerned authorities do not intervene quickly it may snowball into bloodshed as leaders of both villages accused each other of encroachment with the assistance of armed thugs.
It was gathered that controversy over a moat which serve as a boundary between Eyaen, Ahor and Ihovbor villages is about tearing the hitherto peaceful neighbours apart as they call for the Benin Monarch's intervention.
The Head (Odionwere) of Ahor, Pa Osaze Aghimien claimed that from time immemorial both villages had a moat as their boundary, but discovered it has been encroached upon by the Enogie of Eyaen, HRH Osazuwa Aiwerioghene Iduriase.
Pa Aghimien told journalists at Ahor that the Enogie of Ayaen sand filled the moat at different point and started selling off the lands to unsuspecting buyers, while HRH Iduriase in a newspaper advertorial signed by A. Osayomwanbor Esq debunked the claims, reaffirming an earlier response by the Odionwere of Ayaen, Pa Imagbenikaro Igbinosun.
HRH Iduriase said at the time the moat was covered, the people of Eyaen complained to the Oba of Benin and the police, against Ahor village.
"His Royal Highness (Dr.) Osazuwa Aiwerioghene Iduriase (JP.) and His people hereby make it clear that they did not cover the boundary moat nor authorised the covering/blocking of same", He said
The Enogie alleged the moat was covered by the people of Ahor village, adding, "at the moment Ahor village people have laid out the area into building plots and made roads across the land area into Eyaen community preparatory to selling same".
Contacted, to confirm the Enogie's earlier claim of reporting the matter to the police, Spokesman for The Edo state police Command, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor said, the headquarters is yet to get report from the division where the disputed area is located.
"We have a divisional headquarters covering them, down here at the headquarters how would I know? I wouldn't know if such report is made because we are of different offices", DSP Nwabuzor said in a telephone chat.
