4,575 EDO INDIGENES SO FAR RETURN FROM LIBYA-OMOROGBE

No fewer than 4,575 Edo indigenes have so far been returned to the state from Libya since the inauguration of the Edo State Taskforce Against Human Trafficking.

The Chairperson of the taskforce and Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice Prof. Yinka Omorogbe disclosed this during campaign against human trafficking in Auchi.

Prof. Omorogbe said that the taskforce secured the return of  3,177 men and 1,238  female  Libya.

He said taskforce was inaugurated in 2017 towards the total eradication of the scourges of human trafficking and illegal migration which have led to untold suffeting and deaths of thounsands of Edo men and women.

"We make bold to say that Edo through the promotion of people centered policies and activities such as those undertaken by the taskforce, has been able to make positive contributions helping to change the narative around the drive for irregular travel to foreign destination.

"The taskforce is fully committed towards ensuring that in a short while, Edo and its citizens will no longer be associated with either of these twin evils irregular migration and human trafficking," she said.

Prof. Omorogbe said that the returnees were given a stipends between 20,000 to 25,000  for a period of three months in other to aid their process of return and reintegration, adding that the paynent is part of a holistic approach towards returnees attaining economic self-sufficiency.

"But, we are telling them it is not the best decision, and in the same time the government is setting in place different things to make sure our youths are gainfully employed," she said.

The Chairperson expressed worry over the increase of young men and women from Edo-North seeking greener pasture, adding that the taskforce would intensify it campaign against haman trafficking.

"We have come here because Edo State Government is concerned on young girls and boys who travel for greener pasture and later sold into slavery.

"We are here to carryout awarness and sensitisation to discourage our young men and women in this area on the negative impact of traveling through Libya to Europe," she said.

The Otaru of Auchi, HRH Alhaji H.A Momoh, Ikelebe II commended the state government towards curbing human trafficking and ensuring that the returnees were integrated into the society.

The Royal father assured the team of the palace's cooperation in ensuring that the campaign against human traffiking is taken to nooks and crannies of the community in other to discouraged young men and women from traveling outside the country through land to oversea.
